Design to better the world around us

Design Doesn’t Live on an Island

No design exists in isolation. Every product, every graphic, every interface is part of a visual and cultural ecosystem; it pushes the language of tomorrow. What we create today informs what people will expect, what competitors will imitate, and how trends evolve. Design isn’t just functional or beautiful; it’s contagious. It spreads ideas and subtly shapes the world around us.

Following Trends vs. Setting Trends

There’s a big difference between following trends and setting them. Following means absorbing what already exists, letting the visual and functional language of the market guide your choices. It’s a natural, evolutionary process: you see well-designed products on the shelf and lift your own work to fit the same level.

Setting trends, however, requires vision. The first design to elevate a category, when done thoughtfully, paves the way for others. Competitors notice, copy, and improve. This isn’t bad; it’s the highest form of respect. The copycat acknowledges excellence. And when everyone benefits (clients, users, and audiences) design has improved life in real ways.

Let’s talk hypothetical

Imagine redesigning a supermarket. Organizing shelves, creating clear and elegant communication, and improving the flow for shoppers isn’t just a functional improvement; it boosts sales and enhances the customer experience. When other supermarkets notice and say, “Wait, we can do that too,” you’ve set a standard. More satisfied customers, more revenue, better quality of life. Optimistic competition drives progress and design is a key tool.

Designing for a Better Future

At 63design, we see design as a way to lift the world around us. Every decision can inspire someone, improve a space, or elevate how a product communicates. Good design spreads positivity, like noticing a well-dressed friend and wanting to emulate the same flair but in your own style. The key is maintaining your voice, your originality, while taking inspiration from others.

Inspire, Don’t Replicate

The real skill is balancing expectation with quality. Design informs design, trends influence trends, but the goal is never to copy blindly. Be inspired by what’s excellent in the world around you, and translate it through your own lens. By doing so, we create work that elevates not only our clients but the environment and culture in which we live.

Design is influence. Design is optimism. Design is the subtle force that shapes a better world.
